ZAMBIA LAW DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION HANDS OVER A REPORT ON THE REVIEW OF THE BRITISH ACTS (EXTENSION) ACT, CHAPTER 10 OF THE LAWS OF ZAMBIA

The Zambia Law Development Commission (ZLDC) has handed over the project report on the review of the British Acts (Extension) Act, Chapter 10 of the laws of Zambia. The handover ceremony was held on Tuesday, 21st March 2023 at the Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Lusaka.

Minister of Justice Hon. Mulambo Haimbe officially received the report and commended the ZLDC for the law review projects being undertaken to facilitate the development of the law in Zambia. He also added that Government will continue to render the necessary support to ZLDC in order to enable the Commission to execute its mandate of law reform effectively. He further stated that the process output will be pivotal in informing proposals for amending and developing relevant pieces of legislation.

And the Commission Chairperson Hon. Mrs. Justice Ruth Chibbabbuka, in a speech read on her behalf by the Commission Vice Chairperson, Mr. Munukayumbwa Munyima said that the handover of the project report signified the successful completion of Phase I of the project.

“It is the Commission’s sincere hope that this work will pave the way to more legislative and administrative reforms which will facilitate the development of a comprehensive indigenous legal framework that is reflective of the socio-political values of the Zambian people”, she said.

The British Acts extended to Zambia, which government seeks to repeal, are:

  • the Conveyancing Act, 1911;
  • the Forgery Act, 1913;
  • the Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Act, 1913;
  • the Larceny Act, 1916;
  • the Bills of Exchange (Time of Noting) Act, 1917;
  • the Married Women (Maintenance) Act, 1920;
  • the Gaming Act, 1922;
  • the Industrial and Provident Societies (Amendment) Act, 1928;
  • the Limitation Act, 1939; and
  • the Law Reform (Enforcement of Contracts) Act, 1954.
